CAN / CAN’T: vấn đề nào đó có/không thể xảy ra hoặc bạn nào kia có/không tài năng làm việc gì.COULD / COULDN’T (quá khứ của CAN): thường được sử dụng với những động từ đặc biệt quan trọng như see, hear, smell, taste, feel, remember, understand.BE ABLE TO: dùng cố cho CAN / COULD, cần sử dụng khi mong nói fan nào này đã xoay xở có tác dụng được việc gì vào 1 tình huống cụ thể.MUST / MUSTN’T: tin chắc chắn một điều gì đấy đúng/không đúng sự thật, thỉnh thoảng mang nghĩa bắt buộc. MUST nói về hiện tại với tương lai, còn HAVE TO sử dụng được trong tất cả các thể.MAY / MIGHT: bài toán nào đó có thể xảy ra (ý nghĩa tương lai).SHOULD / OUGHT TO: dùng khi mong muốn đưa ra ý kiến, lời khuyên.

Lưu ý:

CAN, COULD, WOULD, MAY: được sử dụng trong câu đề nghị, yêu cầu cho phép, lời mời (thường là câu hỏi)Các modal verb vẫn được dùng trong trường hợp quá khứ: COULD / MUST / MAY / MIGHT / SHOULD + HAVE + vượt khứ phân từCòn đa phần khi dùng thì hiện tại: MODAL VERB + V-bare (động tự nguyên mẫu)
